Ruth Gray Schatz

Ruth passed away peacefully on Sunday 27th November 2016 in Ottawa.
Ruth shared her life with her husband of 60 years, Dr Stanley Schatz, until he passed away in April 2014, and with her loving family of whom she was enormously proud: her four children, Douglas Schatz (Meryl Halls), Deberah Griffiths (Fred Griffiths), Dr Jennifer Schatz (Dr Vernon Stringer), and Julia Schatz (John Barrack); and her ten grandchildren: Titus, Kimberley, Jonathon, Eilidh, Jillian, Liam, Callum, Alana, Michael and Luke.
Born on 17th August 1928, the daughter of Victor Evan Gray and Ruth Denovan Gray, and sister of Elizabeth (Betty) and Joan, Ruth went to school at Moulton College in Toronto, followed by Victoria College, University of Toronto, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics in 1951. She embarked thereafter on many years of involvement in education, including as a teacher at Ontario Ladies College in Whitby and Bishop Strachan School in Toronto, while supporting Stanley as he trained as a neurosurgeon. Ruth served in many volunteer capacities, including as an influential Chair of a lobby group for Ward 10 of the Toronto School District, and on the Board of Governors of Hillfield Strathallan College in Hamilton.
Ruth had wide ranging cultural curiosity in art, architecture and literature. These found expression in her energetic participation as a member of the Executive of the Volunteer Committee of the Art Gallery of Hamilton, as President of the Women’s Canadian Club of Hamilton and as President of the Canadian Federation of University Women in Oakville.
Ruth had a particular passion for heritage and architecture, which she shared by creating her own tour company in the 1970s, Heritage Trails, where she led immaculately researched study trips around the province. She also served on the Ontario Heritage Board and on the Conservation Review Board of Ontario.
Ruth’s unfailing curiosity and commitment was a model for all of the power of life-long learning. No less was her inexhaustible love and support for her family. She was deeply loved and will be missed.
The immediate family will receive friends at Ward Funeral Home, 109 Reynolds St, Oakville from 4:30pm – 8:00pm on Monday 5th December. A memorial service to celebrate Ruth’s life will be held at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, 1585 Yonge St, Toronto at 10:30 am on Tuesday 6th December.
The family would also like to thank Latoya Lewis and Samia Berganio for their wonderful care for Ruth in her last two years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University Women’s Club of Oakville Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 69600, 109 Thomas Street, Oakville, L6J 7R4 or online at http://cfuwoakville.ca/scholarship-fundraising/with the goal of setting up a scholarship for Arts students in Ruth’s name.
